International Justice Day 2021

World Day for International Justice or International Justice Day or International Criminal Justice Day is every year celebrated on the 17th of July. People organize events on this day to promote international criminal justice support for the International Criminal Court.

What is Justice?

Justice is also known as fairness, when a decision is taken by taking the laws into an account then it is known as justice. The main aim of making laws is that everyone in society can get justice and be treated equally. If Justice is not served properly then it is known as injustice, which may result in rebellion, dissatisfaction in the society. So, to maintain harmony in society social justice should be done.

The Theme of International Justice Day 2021:

This year the theme of The International Justice Day is “A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy”. There is a huge inequality that has been growing day by day in society between the people who have the access to digital resources and those who haven’t. The Covid-19 has shown this difference clearly. People who have access to the digital Platform got vaccinated early and those who haven’t are still waiting for their chance.

Why International Justice Day is celebrated on 17th July?

World Justice Day is celebrated on 17th July because on this date a treaty was done which results in the establishment of the International Criminal Justice. World Justice Day is also celebrated to aware the public and to support the Victim’s rights and justice. International Justice Day also celebrates the international justice tribunal and courts which have brought and continuously brings Justice for war criminals and crimes against humanity.

What is the Goal of International Justice Day?

The main aim of this day is to bring together all the people who believe in the justice system and victims’ rights. Also, prevent the crimes which may lead to disturbed the world’s peace and security and well being of the people. Every nation has its own chain of courts like Session Court, High Court and Supreme Court. When a Nations Court system fails to deliver justice or is not willing to order investigations or give justice to the victim then International Criminal Court aka ICC comes into play to serve them justice.

World Justice Day is a medium to highlight the justice delivered to the victims on this day. International Criminal Court always motivates the nations to join this battle of Justice so that culprits can bring to justice and in near future, these kinds of events can be stopped.

On this day news channels, radio & FM Station, Newspapers promote this day and shows support towards the International Criminal Court (ICC). Some matters of concern are brought to the attention of the general public such as crime against women, genocide, racial abuse etc.

  • 17th July 1998: Rome Statue treaty was adopted by 120 states to informally establish The International Criminal Court.
  • 1st July 2002: 60 Countries has endorsed the Rome Statue which results in the official establishment of The International Criminal Court.
  • 1st June 2010: On this day Rome Statute was adopted as the World Day for International Justice.
  • 10th July 2012: The first-ever sentencing and conviction took place at The International Criminal Court. Congolese criminal Warlord, Thomas Lubanga Dylio was the first person that was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
