Venue: Surajkund, District Faridabad
Timing: 10.30 AM to 08.30 PM
This year Haryana is all set for the 36th Surajkund International Crafts Mela. In the early two weeks of February, a splash of colour, the rhythm of drumbeats, and joy de vivre converge in Surajkund in Faridabad, Haryana. The celebrated yearly Surajkund International Crafts Mela, a festival of Indian folk customs and cultural heritage, opens its doors on February 3rd this year.
Taking pride of position on the worldwide tourism calendar, almost a million visitors attend the Mela throughout the fortnight, including numerous foreign travelers. The Surajkund Mela is unusual in that it highlights the diversity and richness of India's handicrafts, handlooms, and cultural fabric and is the world's biggest crafts fair.
The Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism are organising the Mela in partnership with the Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs.
- To plan, administer, and manage the Surajkund International Craft Mela in Surajkund, Faridabad, with the goal of promoting handicrafts and handlooms with the assistance of artisans from all over the country.
- Identifying and introducing ailing and lesser recognized crafts to clients.
- Organize demonstration areas on the Mela grounds to exhibit crafts and weaving methods.
- To promote the export of handlooms and handcrafts.
- To create a setting in which rural craft traditions might be shown, as well as to portray the traditional rural ambience of a typical village near Delhi for visitors who may not have the time or resources to visit an Indian hamlet.
The Mela was established primarily to encourage a pool of talented artists who utilised indigenous technology but were being harmed by inexpensive machine-made replicas. Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism have made a concerted effort to give a forum for craftspeople and wavers to directly promote their items by cutting out the middlemen. Surajkund Crafts Mela was held for the first time in 1987 in order to conserve India's dwindling arts and crafts. The Mela grounds include 40 acres and have over 1010 work cottages that accommodate artisans and weavers.
Surajkund International Crafts Mela provides tourists with a once-in-a-lifetime experience by displaying a diverse array of textiles, paintings, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, masonry, lac querware, cane and grass items.
