  1. Fasting every alternate day (or intermittent energy restriction), in which no calories are consumed during fasts.
  2. Fasting on alternate days (or partial intermittent energy restriction) permits up to 25% of daily calories to be consumed on fasting days instead of a complete fast. This is like alternating between eating normally and eating low-calorie diets for a few days each week.
  • The whole day fast or periodic fasting refers to a period of nonstop fasting of at least 24 hours. Examples include the 5:2 diet, where one or two fasting days per week are scheduled, to the more extreme version where several fasting days or weeks are scheduled. It is possible to consume about 500 to 700 calories, or about 25% of the usual caloric intake, instead of fasting entirely on fasting days.
