History of Churu Fort

The Churu Fort was built by Thakur Kushal Singh in 1649 and during the battle of 1871, the area came under the dominion of Bikaner. Churu was earlier ruled by the Banirod Rajputs, descendants of Rao Banirot. Shekhawat fought with the Rathors to defend the city fort. The battle became famous for the use of a silver cannon shell.

Even today the desendants of Taknet and Banirot still live in the city of Churu. Before the independence of India, Churu was a part of Bikaner state and today Churu itself is a district of 8 tehsils.

The Story of Silver Balls Cannon

Every fort has its own history and story to tell. But the story of Churu Fort located in Rajasthan makes it different from others. In 1694, Thakur Kushal Singh built Churu Fort.Silver balls were fired from cannons at enemies in the Churu fort, one of many such forts in Rajasthan, which draw people from around the world to visit for this unique reason.

It is said that Churu Fort was built keeping in mind the safety of the people along with self-defense. In the year 1814, such an incident happened from this fort, which separated its identity from others. At that time this fort was ruled by Thakur Shivji Singh, a descendant of Thakur Kushal Singh. It is said that Thakur Shivaji Singh was a self-respecting ruler. On the other hand, the princely state of Bikaner was ruled by Maharaj Surat Singh.

When the ammunition ran out during the war, the cannons fired silver bullets and balls at the enemies, which is unique in the world. When ammo ran out, the cannons of this fort were repurposed to hurl silver balls and bullets at the enemy. This historical occurrence, which took place in the year 1814, was incredibly unexpected. At that time this fort was ruled by Thakur Shivji Singh, a descendant of Thakur Kushal Singh.

According to historians, Thakur Shivji Singh's army originally consisted of 200 infantry and 200 cavalry soldiers. However, during the war, the army's size unexpectedly increased because the locals were willing to sacrifice anything for their king, which is why he used to engage in soldier-like combat. In addition, he had a history of using even his wealth to defend his monarch and realm.

The Churu fort was attacked by Raja Surat Singh of the princely kingdom of Bikaner in August 1814. Here, Thakur Shivji Singh also engaged him in battle with his soldiers, but he soon ran out of ammo. The monarch was now concerned, but his followers rallied behind him and sacrificed all of their riches and silver on him in order to defend the kingdom. Thakur Shivji Singh then gave the order for his warriors to fire silver shells from the cannon at the enemies. The result was that the enemy force gave up and left after admitting defeat. This incident is recorded forever in Churu history.
