Agriculture of Aloe Vera

Nowadays, Aloe vera is being cultivated on a very large scale as an ornamental plant. Modern growers are growing Aloe Vera because of its medicinal properties. Its versatility enables it to survive in natural areas with low rainfall, making it very popular among farmers of plateau and arid regions. Ghrit Kumari is unable to withstand snow and frost. It is generally capable of resisting insects, but some pests such as mealybugs, track bugs and aphid insects can cause a decline in plant growth. For plants in pots, sandy soil in which there is good drainage of water, bright sunny conditions are ideal. Usually terracotta pots are recommended for these plants as they are porous and good quality compost. Ghrit Kumari enters dormancy during winters and requires very little moisture during this time. In areas prone to snow or frost, it is better to keep the plants indoors or in a greenhouse.

Aloe vera is believed to be native to North Africa and mainly related to Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia as well as the Canary Islands and Madeira Islands, although it is now grown throughout the world. The species was introduced to China, India, Pakistan and various parts of southern Europe in the seventeenth century. The species is also successfully grown in temperate and tropical regions such as Australia, Barbados, Belize, Nigeria, the United States and Paraguay.
